They did have rock crystal globes back in Da Vinci's day and I think you are right this has a bit too much restoration to the point of being a curious artifact rather than an original painting.

Though, of course, the final product that sold at Christie's for 450 megs is a whole another story and can't be any longer be considered Leonardo anymore. Thank goodness reversible paints are being used today in restoration works, so this is not a complete loss.... but still, a world renowned restorer with vast knowledge of art and history should know better than letting this homunculus leave her workshop...
